Bad Owner. 1 Dog Died from Exposure. I Took the Other One. Now What?

Question by clever_nickname: Bad Owner. 1 Dog Died from Exposure. I Took the Other One. Now What?
Long story short. I live in Atlanta (Dekalb County) and I took a dog from a relative. She neglected her 2 dogs. They lived in a crate, outside in the cold at an abandoned house. She claims to have fed them everyday. I doubt it. On the night one of them died, she actually asked me when was my trash day & if I could place him in my trash can. And since she was planning to leave the other dog outside, I took him. He is underweight. Had no water ("I don't give them any. It just freezes anyway") And now she wants him back. Just to put him back outside. He is boxer/terrier mix. Not fixed. ~2yrs old. I have 2 dogs of my own, and can't keep him permanently. What can I do now? Who to call? She feels as though she has done nothing wrong...

I would suggest turning him over to animal control or the local SPCA. Tell them what you wrote here. She may not be able to get him back. Other than that, unless she has proof that it is her dog, I would find it a home that can care for it.

  1. I would call the local animal protection agency and explain the situation. They’ll be able to help you make a good choice that are within the laws.

  2. Call the animal shelter or the police!

  3. Here: http://www.atlantahumane.org/who/report-animal-cruelty.asp The Atlanta Humane Society has information on reporting cruelty. Follow their instructions to report, then turn the dog over to the investigating officer to find a new home.

  4. Call a no-kill rescue, or several and ask them if they can take the dog. Make sure they know the whole story especially the part about the neglect. Let the rescue know everything about the previous owner that you can so that they can keep from adopting the dog back to her. Then tell your relative that the dog ran away or got loose. It is in the best interest of the dog. I don’t know why but some people seem so stubborn about treating animals cruel. Or, if you want to get the authorities involved you can contact your local animal control. But animal cruelty can be hard to prove and prosecute. I think your best bet is to get the dog to a safe permanent new home. And keep an eye on her to make sure that she does not get any more dogs and treat them like this.

  5. To avoid prosecution, I would turn him over to a private rescue in another town where she couldn’t find him. If she reported you for theft, it would be her word against yours, unless there were witnesses. If you don’t mind lying, you could tell her he died, too. If he was tied when you got him, you might get in trouble with the law like Tammy did (the Dogs Deserve Better lady) for taking that German Shepherd off his chain, so I wouldn’t take him to a city shelter for that reason. City shelters are also frequently known to “accidentally” euthanize surrendered dogs (they do anyway after 3 days- sometimes immediately if they’re overcrowded, and I doubt you could get him back).

  7. Find a friend to care for the dogs for a few weeks while you tell her the dog ran away…

Probably to go back to her, then tell her to go home and keep an eye out for him.

  8. Whatever you do, do not give the dog back. When she gave him to you she gave up all rights to him.

If you can’t keep him permanently I’d take him into the Humane society and tell them his story and about how the other dog died.

That’s really an awful situation, I’m sorry. Those poor dogs :(

  10. if one dog died don’t take it back. she could just kill this one too. it doesn’t matter if she bought it or not don’t let her kill another one of god precious beings. i really don’t care for people who can kill an animal and just put it in a trash can. that is just plain ridiculous.
