chihuahua owners: where does your chi sleep? wih you? in a crate? in his or her own bed?

Question by Broken Pearls: chihuahua owners: where does your chi sleep? wih you? in a crate? in his or her own bed?
ive been looking at various ways of how to potty train my chi at night time, but one problem, they all seem to say things like:

''You'll most likely have Fido sleeping in his crate overnight, so, along with this article, you should also read our article about "Acclimating Fido to his Crate". If necessary, you can get additional help from our articles that teach you what to do if Fido barks in his crate or goes potty in his crate.''

i really really dont want my dog sleeping in a crate overnight, id prefer her to sleep in my bed or in her own bed on my bed if that makes sense. so, anyone know how to potty train over-night: ie, everyhour get up pick up your pup and place on pee pad. that woukld be a simple answer but what if i accidntly sleep in, he/she'd poo in my bed!?? help!

I don't own a chihuahua, but I do own a toy breed dog (papillon).

I do advise crating the dog at night, at least until the dog is fully housebroken. My dog now sleeps on the bed with me, but she slept in her crate until she was a year old.

  1. Mine sleep in their own crates at night. It’s a matter of personal choice. Crate training is the way to go when it comes to potty training though. It makes it so much easier.

  2. i understand what you want, but what you need to do is crate train the dog until it is potty trained. once it can go thru the night without peeing and pooping then sure you can invite it to sleep with you or get it a bed to sleep on. thats what i did, and its not that big of a deal. once the dog is potty trained, you can get some stairs to put next to the bed, so it can wake you up in the morning. my dog just jumps on the bed to wake me up on weekends when he has to go potty. crate training is about the dog learning respect and having his own safe haven and place. my dog isn’t crated anymore during the day, but when i leave he always goes in there, i don’t make him, but i think he feels safer in there. oh and trust me, you’ll have to get up either way during the night to take the puppy out to go potty. don’t rely on the pee pads if you don’t have to. the object is to have the dog pee outside before it pees inside.

  3. I have 2 chihuahuas, and I LOVE THEM TO DEATH!! They are so cute! But anyways, sorry. When we first got our chi, we but him in a kennel, and let him out right before bed, and right after. We also put a pee pad in his kennel, just in case. Chi’s don’t like sleeping in their own crap, so they will try to hold it after they first sleep in their kennel. Keep your chi in a kennel for about a month or more, as long as it takes to keep it from peeing & pooping in the kennel. I sleep with my doggies, and they love me so much, they’d let me know if they need to go out. When they are little, they wont want to sleep long, so they will start to play with you while your sleeping- and i bet you will wake up.
All dogs will poop, but just tap them on the nose and point them at the poo and say no! They will understand that it’s not a good thing to do after a while.
Good luck!! You are going to love your chi!!

  4. i have a chi and we gave her her own bed and put it in the same area as her pee mat and pinned her in that area. that way she has a comfy bed and room to move around, but no matter where she goes she is close to the potty area.

  6. I would highly recommend crate training. It really is the best way, and my chihuahua loves her crate! It’s the best way to prevent accidents. Once she is crate trained, she can sleep in your bed with you. Most dogs prefer having a place of their own to go to.

  7. They all sleep with us, even the puppies (3-4mo). Of course, when Moms have new puppies they stay in a whelping box for several weeks, but by the time they are 2+mo old, they sleep with us. Our bed has two humans and several chihuahuas most nights.

As far as the potty training, you just put them on their potty pad in the middle of the night once and first thing in the morning around 5am. They don’t pee where they sleep.

  8. my friend had that problem too. She found a trainer in the phonebook and had a trainer train her three chihuahuas. The two girls sleep on her bed with her and the boy sleeps in a bed. She didn’t force them to sleep in one place, they just chose it. They did poop and pee at first, but she had them trained and they don’t anymore. Hope this helps!

  9. I put my pup in a cage by my bed overnight. She would cry and then I would take her outside, let her do her business and then put her back in. For the first week she cried at least 2 or 3 times a night to use the restroom. You just have to get out of bed and show her where exactly to go. After a month she started to sleep in the bed with me and she was good after that

  10. My Chihuahua is crate trained and potty trained so I have no problem of where she sleeps, sometimes she sleeps at the feet of my bed, sometimes she sleeps in her cushion house in my room, when you are potty training her now make her sleep in a crate, when she is fully trained she can sleep with you so you don’t have to worry about those accidents
the first few nights when I started to potty train her I had to wake up in the middle of the night- take her out back to do her stuff and then back to sleep, it has become a routine for her but i dont take her out every night in the middle of the night just to get her used to it but when i wake up we go outside…
