Fiance is allergic to dogs’ skin oils and dander but no so much the hair. Would a “single coat” dog be okay?

Question by Rachel: Fiance is allergic to dogs' skin oils and dander but no so much the hair. Would a "single coat" dog be okay?
We're not big fans of the "hypoallergenic" breeds, like poodles, or the designer hybrid breeds, i.e. labradoodles. He thinks he'd be okay with a dog that has a single coat rather than a double coat. Do Dobermans have single coats? Any other nice (big) dogs that have single coats? We'd also be open to a nice mutt that has a single coat, as the idea of purebreds make us a bit nervous with all their potential for health problems...any help greatly appreciated.
We already have a poodle hybrid (schnauzer/maltese mix) which does not bother his allergies at all but this time around we were hoping for a different breed and wondering which breed has a single coat (i.e. he doesn't do well around golden retrievers) and does not have a propensity for skin problems... he does do well around boxers and German Shorthairs, for example. And Weimerieners (sp?) although those have a wee bit too much energy for us. Thanks!

ALL DOGS HAVE DANDER -- IT IT FROM THEIR SKIN..

NO DOGS FOR YOU.

you are sadly misinformed if you believe that a properly bred purebred dog is unhealthy..

  1. If he is not allergic to the hair, any dog would be ok. All dogs have skin oils and dander. Frequent bathing of the dog and lots of vacuuming the house (along with a good air filter) may help.

  3. Single coated dogs still shed, have dander and skin oils so I’m pretty sure he’d still be allergic..

  4. i would say go for a lab/ border collie mix. they tend to give off a lot less fur, and dander than most. i have 7 different breeds (most mutts) and i myself am allergic to dogs. my lab/ border collie is the only one that doesn’t bother my allergies.

  5. Sorry, but you should do yourself and the dog a favor and get a cat. If he is allergic, then he is allergic.

There are some rescues that will let you “rent a pet” for a week to see if you fit. Maybe that would give you time to see if he really is allergic. Better to not get a dog than to have to give one back. :(

  6. My SO is severely allergic to dogs (if around the wrong kind, SO goes into asthma attacks). However, we have had excellent luck with toy poodles. Stay away from ones that shed. Wash them every 2 weeks with gentle, mild dog soap.

SO takes Zyrtec daily and it helps immensely.

  7. I am allergic also and I have a beagle terrier mix that I am not allergic too. I don’t know why but it worked out ok for me. I am also allergic to some dog’s saliva so make sure before you get a dog to have the dog that you are thinking of getting and your fiance get together for a play and slobber fest to see if he is allergic to THAT particular dog. Dobies are single coat dogs.

  8. i would take your future husband to the animal shelter and have him be around some breeds. maybe they will allow you to take the dog for a walk. thus being able to tell if he is still allergic to the dog….when its away from other dogs.

  9. All dogs have dander and skin oils. You could get a dog with no skin, but that seems rather impractical! I think you’re pretty much out of luck.

And do NOT buy into that old wives’ tale about mixed breeds being healthier than purebreds! That is totally wrong! The mixed breeds carry all the potential for health problems that exist in the breeds they’re mixed with. There is no such thing as “hybrid vigor” in dogs. At least with a purebred you *know* what you’re dealing with.

BTW, some Dobies I’ve seen have the worst dander and skin problems I’ve ever seen in dogs.
