Question by lesbian 4life: house training question?
i ask a question on here"how long did it take to house train your puppy?"well i know this will sound crazy but how would you know your pup is house train? She is a schnauzer 4months old i got her at 7 weeks and been house training since.i am using the crate training method and it seem to work she holds it all night and i got her on a schedule.if i have her out in my living room which i have some of it blocked off and if i don't take her out every 10-15 mins she will potty without warning.now if i have her in my room playing she will let me know(sometime) when she need to go out by going to my door and sit and start crying, but any other time she wont show no warning signs
thank ky-ann i do stay in the same room with her because i usually am playing with her or i will let her play with my chihuahua and i just stay in there and watch them play
she is on a feeding schedule and for now i feed her 3 times a day .her feeding schedule is 6am,3pm,9pm her last potty break is about 9:30-10pm and all water is taken up after she eats.she hold is all night and only potty in between playing but i do take her out in between playing.oh i have hard wood floor easy clean up.thank you for your answers

If your pup is romping/running, playing when in the livingroom that is why she needs to go potty within 15 minutes. This is normal for a puppy. So, if you want to allow her freedom in the livingroom, first take her out for potty time and WATCH her to be sure she goes. Then, bring her inside and stay in the same room where she is the entire time. After 15 minutes, stop all play and take her out for potty again. You may have been training her for quite some time, but her bladder is still small so she will still need to go frequently. Also, the livingroom may not have access directly to the door that leads outside, hence she just goes on the floor/carpet because she can’t get to the door that she knows goes outside for potty time. But, when in your room there is a door she can see and she knows you will take her through it to go outside for potty time. Also, eating/drinking water and waking up from sleeping (any time of day) are things that make a dog need to go potty. So watch for these things and take her outside right away after any of these. Don’t let your dog have access to dog food all day long. Only feed a breakfast and a dinner meal. If she does not eat all the food in 20 minutes, take it away and don’t give any more food until the next meal time. Regulating her feedings will help you predict when she needs to go potty. Carpet vs. hard floors: if any room has carpet or rugs a dog will choose that as a potty area over a hard floor because it is more comfortable to squat on. So, eliminating these things or only keeping the dog in rooms with hard floor will eliminate most accidents. In my opinion, most dogs are doing pretty well with potty training by 6 months but, still, I would not expect a 6 month old pup to wait for 3 – 4 hours between potty breaks. The smaller the breed the smaller their bladder so you have to keep this in mind. This means more frequent potty breaks for your puppy compared to a German Shepherd the same age as your puppy. The reason your pup does well to hold it when in her crate at night is because when a dog is quiet/confined where it cannot run about/exercise, it can hold it longer. But, a dog who has full run of the house all night long will be more inclined to need a potty break before morning because exercise/moving about makes a dog need to potty.
well it sounds like you have her half way there which is great news. at 4 months of age very very few dogs are perfectly toilet trained and even after being well toilet trained they still have a few accidents here and there.
i think what’s happened though is your dog has worked out not to go in the crate, not to go in your bedroom but it’s ok to go in the lounge room. i find the best method from here is to give lots of praise when they go outside and when they go inside you don’t get angry, you don’t speak or look at them, you just take them outside and leave them out there until you have cleaned up and then bring them back in like nothing happened. the reason you don’t get angry is that it can make them worried and upset about it and then they get so nervous they have an accident. so you are better off just ignoring them when they do it and a smart dog like this breed will work out very fast that going outside = lots of praise and going inside = nothing but you get separated from the people which isn’t what you want. good luck
