Question by Scott D: How do I stop my dog from barking in the morning when I'm getting up, but before I take him out of his crate?
We have a 9 month old male Schnauzer / Poodle mix who is typically not a barker or whiner during the day, but around 6:00 or 7:00 am, he'll always wake up and start barking and whining constantly. That's when I'd normally get up anyway, so the time isn't an issue usually, it's just that he whines and whines until he's let out.... I'd be fine getting up and letting him out at that time, if it wasn't that I feel like he's going to start associating that "lots of whining in the morning" = "get let out of the crate." Any suggestions on how to have him be quiet in the morning, until I'm ready to let him out? We always makes sure he goes to the bathroom before going to bed at night, around 9-11pm.
Thank you!!
...and, if it's just because he needs to go to the bathroom (we always take him out to go, first thing in the morning), will he sleep in longer as he gets older? When??

I can guarantee he has to pee really bad and is whining because he is in pain. 9 months is still young to be holding his pee for that long.
ADD: 6-8 hours is about the max a dog should be expected to hold it comfortably as an adult. People who don't have dog doors usually have to train their dogs to use pee pads.

Ignore him. That is the only way he will learn. If he keeps whining and doesn’t get let out straight away he should eventually stop
There may be other reasons for him whining. Try getting up a little earlier and ignore him for a few minutes before letting him out. Try to only let him out once he is quiet (tell him to be quite before you open the door)
Edit: Why do people think keeping him in a crate/cage is cruel? It is a normal thing. He is asleep anyway – why would he care? We shut ourselves in our rooms at night and stay in bed – its no different for the dog. It also means if he gets bored when he wakes up he won’t be chewing things up.
As for needing to go out in the morning he should be fine for that time (some dogs can last longer than others though) – he won’t be drinking so much overnight and he goes out first and last thing. Puppies can’t last as long, but your dog should be alright and hopefully as he gets older he will realise whining won’t help.
You know the dog needs to go too. So five minutes earlier wont hurt. Why do you keep a dog in a crate anyway?
that is sooooo mean keepin a dog in a crate!
Stop locking him up!! how would you like to be caged every night? do you cage your partner by night? its not like he is a large dog and he could be trained quite successfully to sleep at your bedroom door where he would feel he was protecting you but god knows why he would want to protect someone who jails him every night for no crime at all other than having 4 legs
Make sure he goes out later in the evening and start your day slightly earlier. If he is whining or barking ignore him and don’t let him out. When he is calm and quiet let him out and praise him. Also put him in his crate at odd times during the day but never let him out if he is vocalising in any way…. only when he is calm and quiet. The problem that you have is that you are rewarding the behaviour you want to stop …he associates vocalising with being allowed out of the crate.
If you get the training right he will be calmer as he gets older but not necessarily sleep more. Once he matures he will be more content just laying quietly on his bed or in his crate. Puppies sleep a lot but they recharge very quickly.
He’s very young. Try leaving chew sticks in the crate overnight so he will not be bored in the morning. He is learning that barking gets your attention. You have to get him to unlearn that behaviour. Change routines so he cannot associate the time of day with barking. Make the room dark so he cannot recognise dawn. Reward him when he is calm, ignore him when he barks to attract attention.
