How does “dog clothing” affect dogs?

by Eco-Pup

Question by Sαrα ♥Dogs Aren't Teacups♥: How does "dog clothing" affect dogs?
I'm writing something for class but I don't have enough information and personal experiences.
Do you dress up your dogs in "dog clothing". If so, how does your dog react? What kind of clothing do you dress them in?
What are reasons to not to dress up your dog? (I'm looking for reasons that affect their mental health and wellbeing.)
How does dressing them up affect the way they act?
Please help by answering these questions. If you have any internet links on this topic I would be very grateful. Thanks.
Maybe I should add this: I'm not talking about how ugly the clothes are or when they wear clothes because it is cold outside. I'm talking about when you pick them up and put unneeded clothing on them. What happens when you struggle to put it on and what if the clothing they wore affected their range of motion?

  1. My dog commit suicide when I used to dress it up. ;(

  2. My one dog I trimmed during the summer. His coat never came back so he has a shirt on at all times now. He doesn’t mind his shirt at all. It really isn’t a big deal to him if he has a shirt on or not.
My dogs don’t really mind dog clothing but, when it is hot they become very uncomfortable because they have a lot of coat.

  3. Dog clothing is for the owner… how does it affect them? it makes them look stupid.
They are un-naturally wrapped in cloth, that moves around as they walk & run etc… so I can only imagine it causes some level of dis comfort.
Its just an other marketing ploy for the gullible.

  4. Most dogs hate it unless it’s extremely cold outside, except for small dogs like Chihuahuas love it. They are total fashion dogs. Especially when you carry it with a little pink dog carrier on your shoulder and it’s wearing clothes that match it. It LOVES that.

  5. Yes, I have clothes for my dogs. They have special outfits for holidays like Christmas and Halloween. They also have clothes to keep them warm when they are outside in the winter. Honestly I don’t think it affects my dogs because I started each of them when they were puppies. I know they act differently when they are wearing clothes…it is kinda a happy different and they will prance around as if they were showing off their outfit. I have only had 1 dog that didn’t enjoy wearing clothes…my English Bulldog. He would tolerate it for pictures and then he would just sit there and hang his head low until you would take it off him…mostly he just had a shirt or a special bandanna mainly because we had a hard time finding something in his size.

  6. My dog has ONE coat for the winter when it’s very cold. That’s it. Quite frankly, I think dressing up your dog is stupid and childish. And it has nothing to do with how the dog thinks – the dog doesn’t know you’re dressing it up in silly clothes. It has everything to do with you looking like you’re using your dog as a substitute baby.

  7. It doesnt. Dogs simple dont care if you dress them up or not.

What does happen, is the owner looks like an idiot and lacks a certain amount of ….maturity? intelligence? common sense?

I think dogs should only be “dressed” due to severe weather/medical conditions…not b/c its 50 degrees outside and your pom or shih tzu needs a pink tu-tu

  8. My dogs hate wearing sweaters in the house but have no problem wearing them outside when it’s cold. I think “dog clothing” is silly when it’s just dress up. Plus dogs have been proven to show emotions such as pride, and I doubt they feel very proud wearing silly dresses. However, I see no problem with sweaters and coats that keep dogs warm while they’re outside.

  9. My dog (Chihuahua) acts just the same whether she is wearing clothes or not.I dress her when it is cold out,for Halloween and sometimes for fun.Right now,she is “naked,” and playing with my German Shepherd.

  10. We have a min pin that we put sweaters, shirts, raincoat, even a winter coat on. She actually will wait for you to put it on. The clothes do not have any barring on her behavior at all! We dress her in the winter to keep her warm, and in the summer (unless it is too hot), to be cute! There is no profound affect on dogs, they could care less. Just like walking them on a leash, they get used to certain behavior.

  11. I am not usually one to dress up my dogs. However, recently I had to do some obedience demos in the rain. I did not want my dog getting wet as we had to be there all day and I had no way to dry her and she has a very thick coat. The only rain coat I could find at the last minute was a cutesy one with a hat.

My dog loved it. When she was wearing it, people would point at her and comment “how cute”. Since she is a total ham, and loves the attention, she “worked” it. However, most of the dogs I have had either didn’t like “clothes” or lived out their lives never having worn anything.

Dressing up a dog is for the owner’s satisfaction. Most dogs either don’t like it or couldn’t care less. Then there is the odd one like my one dog loves the attention it provides. But, except for weather protection I still don’t dress her up.
