How To Crate Train Puppies
A few people think the idea of putting their puppy in a crate is cruel but this is probably because they haven't trained their puppy properly! Crate training your puppy is definitely the way to go! If it's done right, it will save you time and trouble in the future and your dog will LOVE it! I've put together the following advice on the best way to crate train puppies based on my own experience.
If you learn how to successfully crate train puppies, this will make things easier for you (and your puppy) at times when the crate is useful, such as when you are travelling in the car, if you're taking your puppy to the vets or if you have visitors and you need your puppy to be out of the way for a while.
By learning the best ways to crate train puppies you will ensure that both your family and your puppy will get a good night sleep and your puppy will feel comfortable and safe during the night.
THE TOP TIPS TO CRATE TRAIN PUPPIES:
#1 You must ensure that you buy the right size crate for your breed of puppy. Obviously some breeds will grow quicker than others so think ahead or else you will end up having to spend more money when your puppy grows out of his crate!
#2 When your puppy leaves the litter, he will be unsettled and will find the change in environment strange. Many breeders will give you a toy or a small blanket which has their mothers scent on it. By placing this in the crate, your puppy will feel much more comfortable and at ease.
#3 Make the crate comfortable for your puppy. You need to make it a place where your puppy wants to be! Buy a nice, comfortable bed that fits in the crate. A good idea is to get a water bottle that you can attach to the side of the crate. This is better than placing a drinking bowl inside the crate as your puppy will probably spill the water. Make sure he always has a favourite toy in the crate and something good to chew on!
#4 When you want to introduce your puppy to the crate, place a treat inside it and get your puppy used to a certain word for him going in the crate. Keep the door open until he feels comfortable. Stroke him and comfort him from the outside. You can close the door when he is comfortable. Gradually build up the length of time you leave him in the crate. Keep repeating this, eventually, your puppy will go in the crate at his own accord when he wants a bit of peace and quiet!
You must never use the crate as a punishment, this will ruin the training that you have done. Keep the crate somewhere where he can still see people in the house when you're at home.
