Is it wrong to use a “dog crate” for a place for a dog to sleep???

Question by LookingForAPostOfficeJob: Is it wrong to use a "dog crate" for a place for a dog to sleep???
I have a large breed dog and I have an extra large dog crate from a store like L.L.Bean, it is supposedley for up to a saint bernard size dog. My dog likes it cause it keeps him warm in the winter and cool in the summer, it is in the house. My friends say that this is a horrible, cruel, and wrong thing to do... However I find this ridiculous cause they may let their dog run around the house 24/7 but whenever their dog climbs on the sofa or does anything they do not like then they yell at their dog and bop it on the snout. This does nothing.... their dog still makes a mess and goes where they don't want him too. But mine always goes happily to the crate and gets a treat. He always stays by my side when I take him out. So what I'm asking for is your opinion.

  3. I think you are right, the crate gives your dog the safe, comfy boundaries he needs.

    Good luck :)

  5. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what you do. In fact, it is the best thing for dogs!!!

  6. It fine also long as you let you dog out regularly and the dog does not confuse the crate for the bathroom.I would suggest keeping the door open.

  7. A dog crate is a perfect place for a dog to sleep. Most people would even recommend it. It’s especially good since your dog enjoys going in there.

Seems like you are more aware of the do’s and don’ts of dogs than your friend.

  8. If your dog loves his crate and is a good dog then your friends need to be enlightened about crate training. My dog are not allowed to roam the house either when we are not home they know when we say go to your house they go to their crates. They love their crates. We only crate them when we are not at home but some time I find them in their sleeping even when we are at home too.

  9. a crate for an inside dog is a good idea. we have one for our dog. its a place for the dog to call their own. our dog hailey sleeps in hers at night because we dont trust her to run around the house yet. and it is also used when she gets in trouble… she know the difference in trouble and bed time… just put a blanket and maybe a couple of toys in it when you have to door closed

  10. A crate is one of the best things you can do for your dog. It is a wonderful training tool that is very useful for housebreaking and keeping your dog safe from chewing stuff up when you’re not around. The only time a crate is cruel is if it is abused and the dog is forced to live in it all the time. Dogs love the feeling of security a “den” gives them. They can go inside to escape and relax whenever they want. If your dog gets sick or injured, its a great place for them to recover. And if you have to travel, it will be so much easier if the dog is trained to use its crate.

  11. I have a 125 pound German Shepherd (Large breed myself:) and he is crate trained. I feel you’re looking out for your dogs best interest/saftey by putting him in there. In other words being RESPONSIBLE, you’re doing the right thing. I commend you! :)

Really ignorant people don’t crate their dogs then they wonder WHY Rover ate the couch or table. DUH, that is THEIR FAULT!!

My Dog JUST turned 2 yesterday. Little by little we are winging him off the crate but his alone freedom has to be earned. So we’ll see… :)

Again, you’re doing the right thing here!! :)

  12. Your friends are delirious if they think that you’re being cruel. Every dog I’ve ever had has been “crate trained,” from a German Shepard to my little chihuahua. Crate training provides a wonderful opportunity for your dogs to have their own space, and it also gives you piece of mind when you sleep. You know your dog isn’t eating your home one piece of furniture at a time as you sleep. Also, crate training is wonderful for potty training dogs. Most dogs will not go to the bathroom in their cages, so you can also rest easy knowing your dog isn’t having accidents all over the house at night. If you were to keep your dog in the cage 24/7 I would say you were being cruel, but as long as you just keep him/her in there when they sleep, or for quiet time occasionally during the day, I see nothing wrong.

  13. Crate training is a great idea, especially for a large breed dog. If your dog goes into the crate happily, it means you have suceeded in your mission. A happy and safe dog in your home, and a well behaved dog also. A crate is not for punishment. It is for security, like the den that it’s ancestors lived in. Our Rottweiler knows when we are going out, and puts herself in her crate. She also knows she won’t be good if she isn’t in her crate while we are gone. She gets a treat some times, and other times she doesn’t. It doesn’t matter. She knows it is hers, no one else goes in it, and she feels secure inside. You are doing great, and your dog loves you for it. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be by your side when he is out of his crate.

  14. No, it is definitely not wrong to crate train a dog. I used to be one of those ignorant people who thought it was wrong. I was constantly dealing with my dogs destroying my house and having a hard time teaching to potty outside. Then I got a job as a dog trainer and didn’t have a choice about the dogs that I worked with. After just one week at my job I went out and got a crate for my dogs. It was the best thing I ever did. My dogs are so much better behaved now. I can’t believe I ever lived w/o a dog crate. I sometimes wish I could crate my cat.

  15. To tell you the truth i think your friends are idiots, no offense but there is nothing wrong with crate training a dog, in fact you’re dog will be more obedient and better around the house when you let it out so don’t listen to your friends… what your doing is perfectly fine :)

  16. No there is nothing wrong with letting your dog sleep in a crate at night or a place to hang out and just sleep during the day. I use to do that to my younger rat terrier he’d sleep in there at night that way I knew where he was and not getting into anything. But now I let him sleep on my bed and I block off the door so he can’t get outta my room at least. To me it’s a great way to keep tabs on your dog at night and you will be able to sleep knowing he’s safe and sound and not running around about the house. Don’t feel guilty or that it’s cruel cause it’s not in my book at all. Our two rat terriers get put in crates when we are gone they each have their own pillows and blankets in them. I also leave the door open for my younger one to crawl in during the day. It’s sorta like a safe place for him to go when he wants some time alone.

  17. I think it is great! My dog sleeps in whom ever bed she wants. Except mine. It is ok sometimes to treat a dog like a dog. He may be a part of your family but he is still a dog.

  18. My dog’s crate is his home, his haven. It is HIS personal spot in the house where he can go be in it and not be bothered. It is like a wolf den, and he loves it. He gets treats when he goes in it, and he always goes in by himself-he is not forced. It is not cruel, so your friends obviously dont’ know anything about dogs or behaviorism. The crate should always be used as a den for the dog, and never for punishment. A time out spot should be somewhere else in your house-not your dog’s crate.
