Is the dog food “Beneful” from “Purina” healthy for a 4 year old dog?

Question by jessica♥: Is the dog food "Beneful" from "Purina" healthy for a 4 year old dog?
I feed my dog that. He seems to be fine with it. He really likes it, and he is pretty much addicted to it! :D But, sometimes, when he drinks water after he eats, he throws up water and his food. Do you think it's healthy for him?

NO. It is NOT healthy for him. Beneful is one of the worst.
You can read about Beneful and why its not good for him here.

Please look up the top rated dog foods, and switch him to one of those. You'll see an improvement! Just don't switch him cold turkey though, add a little of the new food day by day until he eats only the good food.

  1. Its one of the better lower brand dog foods. My suggestion would be to keep the water away from him for a bit after he eats. My guess is that the food is expanding in his stomache and making him feel a little too full.

  2. Wow, if your dog is doing what you describe as fine eating foods with no nutrition. Imagine how wonderful he would feel if you feed him quality food with nutrition.

Check Wellness or Canidae. No fillers, human grade.. and oh yeah, actual nutrition.

  3. If that is what you can afford and your dog has no allergies to it then by all means give it to him.

It isn’t one of the best but it isn’t one of the worst… use the lamb and rice beneful if you must feed it to your dog…

It is what I feel my fosters and they really like it and no one is losing fur.

ETA like the other poster said… keep the water away after dinner for about a half hour so he doesnt have it expand in his tummy….

  5. Beneful is really awful stuff! There a several wonderful foods on the market that would be so much better for your dog.
Please stay away from IAMS, Science Diet or any crap that you can buy at Walmart or a grocery store!
The good foods may seem a little more expensive but they are really not. You don’t have to feed as much because your dog doesn’t have to eat a ton of fillers to get the nutrition that he needs.
    Good Luck and happy shopping!

  6. No, it is a terrible food. I guarantee you can feed better, even if money is an issue.
    Some brands to try are
    Merrick
    Natural Balance
    Nature’s Recipe
    Solid Gold
    Castor and Pollux

You should consider the ingredients in Beneful to understand better why it is such a terrible choice:
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

This food is mainly made out of nothing but CORN! Corn has little to NO nutritional value.
Your dog likes this food because of the added sugar and artificial flavors.

Please choose another one, and you really will see his health soar then!

  7. No. Look at the ingredients. No dog needs to ingest dyes, or corn, or “animal byproducts”.

  8. Beneful isn’t the best food on the market, but it’s definitely not the worst either. There are plenty of dogs who do well on it. I might try offering smaller portions and withholding water for about 20 minutes after eating and do your best to keep him calm for about 45 minutes afterwards.

  9. It’s not healthy for any age dog. It’s like feeding them McDonald’s every day.

Canidae is only a little more expensive than Beneful and is so much better for your pet. It’s a human grade food with no corn.

    threedogmommaMarch 4, 2011 @ 8:00 pm
  10. Not really. Beneful is “ful” of unhealthy ingredients, like “whole-processed corn” which translates to not only corn kernels (indigestible by dogs) but corn cobs, corn husks, etc. The second ingredient is “meat by-products” which translates to everything we are too afraid to put into hot dogs: legs, beaks, bone meal, any part of the bird that cannot be used in something else.

If you want to stick with Purina, Pro Plan is a better way to go. The best food to get would be Blue Buffalo, but there are plenty of high-quality foods out there. Go to your local pet store, not grocery store, to buy your dog’s food. Do not buy anything with corn gluten (which most dogs are allergic to), lamb and rice formulas are pretty good. Look at the ingredients, feed your dog something you would feel comfortable feeding yourself or your child. Feeding him Beneful is the equivalent of eating hot dogs for every meal, with ketchup added as a vegetable!

  11. I think the better question is ‘are they healthy for any dog?’ to which I say NOT REALLY! I guess it’s better than starvation, but you can do better as far as dog foods go. But no dog food will ever be better than fresh, natural food.
