Its getting warm, how do you keep your dogs cool in the warm summer months?

Question by Jayne: Its getting warm, how do you keep your dogs cool in the warm summer months?
Its nearing June and the days are steadily getting warmer here in the US, which makes me wonder what do other dog owners do keep their pups cool in the summer?

How do you keep them cool if you don't have AC? What extra measures do you take when outside with them.

It was 85 here in Ohio today, and the dogs were feeling it.

For our two in the summer we have a couple of plans. My Fiance and I are currently preparing for a move so we don't have an AC unit and only have access to 1 of our fans. But by saturday of next week our pups will be living large with central air!

Our dachshund pup who isn't quite ready to sleep on his bed with us will be sleeping out of his crate and in the bathroom where he can sleep on the cool linoleum, (plus he can practice sleeping out of his crate) Akira our mix will either sleep in the kitchen or in her bed in our room if we cool it off.

Otherwise we always have water for them. And for cool summer treats we crack out our "Doggy Ice cube trays" and make Cubes out of Low Sodium chicken and beef stock and give them as treats or float them in their water bowl. We also do frozen wet food cubes as a slightly healthier treat!.

What do you do to keep your pooch cool in the warm summer months?
I have never had an issue keeping the critters cool, I just like hearing what other people do.

The cats drink lots of water, sleep on the metal washer and dryer, and take over the windows!

Just try keeping fans on. If you're willing to spend money some pet stores offer a cooling pad for dogs. It's just like a little bed that keeps cool so they'll be more comfortable. Keep ice cubes in the water dish, make sure there's plenty of shade around. And if your dog likes water then let him play in the sprinklers or give him a cool bath.

Great idea with the ice cube treats btw! =)

  1. -give them lots of cold water
-give them ice cubes to lick
-you could even make some sort of shade thing in your yard and put a bed under neath it so they can stay in the shade
    - i think i heard about this cooling pad thing that your dogs can lay on.. so you could research that
-get a kiddie pool and fill it will cold water and let them play in it
-run a sprinkler for them to run around in

    hope that helps :)

  2. i put them in the freezer until fall

  3. OMG How did dogs live before humans? oh that’s right…. they didn’t.. O wait yes they did!!!

  4. You could try getting a fan…I don’t know what a dog would think of that, though. My puppy loves to jump around and play in water. You could buy a little plastic pool and let your dogs cool off in that. Make sure to always keep a steady supply of water on hand either way.

  5. Keep fans on

    Bathe them more often

Some pet stores offer cooling pads

thats really all you can do…

  6. We got our dogs a small plastic pool. It’s about three feet wide and only costs $ 10 at petsmart. They abolutely love it! and it’s a great way for them to stay cool.

  7. True indeed..summer is on its way now and we, pet-owners should be cautioned on the hot days of the summer season.

Here are links that can give you pretty informative tips on how to keep your dog cool during the hot, summer days:

  8. lots of water for the dog and stay in air-conditioning.

  9. When our AC broke we kept our bulldogs down in the basement with the lights off and fans blowing on them. They had their lixit bottles to get water from. I would put small pieces of ice in their bottles to cool it. They only went upstairs when they had to go outside. Either that or we just took them out the side door to let them out in the back yard.

Upstairs for our weims we had ice water and all the lights off. My dogs have water all the time.

When we do have AC (hasn’t broke since last summer), its the same cept my bulldogs are generally upstairs. They still have their lixit bottles though, we train our pups to drink from them at a young age. It keeps them from drinking to much to fast.

When i put ice cubes in the water my dogs go ice fishing it’s hilarious.

At shows i have water bottles, cool coats in ice water, squirt bottles and towels, i generally give them a wet down after they finished showing. Before showing i put the cool coat on them but first i take the cool coat and rub them down. When they want water i use the squirt bottle. That stuff comes off when im in the ring showing, and comes back on while im waiting to be evaluated.

  10. I buy each of my dogs a kiddy wading pool, so they can lay in the water. We go for walks down by the lake and the dogs go swimming. I freeze plastic pop bottles(20 oz size) and place them in the dogs water dishes, before I leave for work. Make sure that they have plenty of water, and shade when they are outside. Leave fans on and windows open with shades or curtains closed.

    Enjoy your central air!!!!
I am planning on joining the dogs in their pools!!! Yeah!!!!

  11. I have AC on for the dogs or fans on. Plus they get ice cubes in their water throughout the day and also fresh water a couple of times a day.

  12. Here’s what I do…
    – Soak a towel in cold water, ring it out and wipe the dog all over with it. The dogs are most sensitive to heat on their underside, so be sure to wipe their tummy. It is also a quick way of giving them a bath.
    – Put an ice cube or two in their water dish. Make sure that they have plenty of water. Make sure that you change their water a couple of times a day.
    – 1 or 2 teaspoons of plain vanilla ice cream (the cheapest you can find) on a plate is a great treat for them. Or you can find doggie ice cream at your pet store.
    – My dog also likes to lie on the basement floor. It is the coolest part of the house.

  13. sorry i do not know we have a a/c save some $ and buy u one we got one for $ 300.00
