My 5 month old puppy won’t stop peeing in his crate!?

Question by Cynthia: My 5 month old puppy won't stop peeing in his crate!?
I've read every article I could find and have followed every bit of advice I have found, not to mention this is not my first dog, but it's my first dog that REFUSES to hold his pee for any amount of time. He is a very hardheaded, stubborn basset hound.

I have stuck to the strict routine of feeding and monitoring how and when he makes bowel movements. He has a large crate, but it has been sectioned off to allow only enough space for him to get in, turn around, lay down in a comfortable fashion.

I monitor him via webcam while at work and he will spend about a minute whining before he pees, but the time frame in between my departure and him peeing has been as little as an hour and as long as 5 hours (which is what I've read a 5 month old puppy should be able to hold it for). It's a complete crap shoot. He's on average in his crate 2-3 hours at a time and never more than 5 hours (except the one time when my husband was rear-ended on his way home from work and was late).

Here's a basic day:

7:30 am - he immediately goes outside and pees; comes back inside and I eat a quick breakfast (I eat first because the "top dog" eats first), then I feed him the appropriate amount for his age along with plenty of water, we go back outside until he poos (which is almost immediately) and pees at least twice more. Then back inside until around 8:30-9 am and then he goes back into his crate while I get ready for work. He goes back outside right before I leave for one final pee.

The same routine happens in between 12 and 1pm and again in between 7 to 7:30 pm. There is at minimum always an hour of playtime after every meal. Most nights I spend at 2-3 hours playing with him.

I have a water bottle in his cage because you aren't supposed to withhold water from a puppy, but he rarely goes to it for water. I clean the floor underneath his crate, the floor of his crate with an enzyme cleaner specifically for dog urine.

Today we decided to try making the switch to 2 slightly increased meals a day instead of 3, skipping the noon meal. This is recommended for a puppy of 6 months; however, he is growing larger than the expected rate and I feel like he would be okay. He went back into his crate from a meal-less noon outing at 1:30; an hour and a half, at 2:30 pm... he peed in his crate!

Why is he OK with peeing in his crate and then laying in it when he is perfectly capable of holding it a few hours? Where is all the pee coming from? Is he storing it like a camel and doing it on purpose? This is driving me insane. HELP!
I tried leaving the tv on low while at work one day and apparently it stressed him out so much he chewed off his collar. Without the tv he was showing no sign of stress. He sleeps and pees.

I can talk to him as well as see him with the webcam.
To the person below who told me I should be stuck in a box for 8 hours and expected to hold it. Ummm yeah, you obviously didn't read my question summary or you confuse the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 with the number 8. Beyond that, I'm more than capable of holding it 8 or more hours. I don't expect that of a puppy or child. I do expect that a 5 month old puppy hold it for 1 hour. That's not cruelty, that's pretty dern normal.

get a doggie diaper they do make them. Also leave some kind of noise on when you leave for work, tv, radio just something so he can hear people and it might lower his stress over you being gone to work.

  1. Make sure he sees and smells the pee – when you come home stick his face in it (not really meanly of course) and say NO! I also use the spray bottle of water on my dog because she hates water. Then, immediately take him outside. Do this every time, and try to resist the cuteness. Also, it sounds like you are with the puppy enough that you don’t need to keep water in his crate. I would take it out.
