Question by Mummy of one and TTC: What exactly is a dog crate?
i've been reading about dog crates, and are these the metal "cages" or are they the plastic ones with the metal door??
Also how often do you use it for your dogs? some people say no more than 3 hours, but what about night time, is it ok to put the dog in a "crate" for the whole night while asleep?
As much info would be great!
Thanks in advance
Also is there a big difference between plastic or metal ones? which ones are more comfortable and safe feeling for your dogs?

My husband and i have a 1yr old siberian husky and an 8yr old lab mix and for both of them we use the plastic kennels with metal doors. however we will be upgrading to an all metal kennel for the husky because shes chewed a hole through her 1st kennel and had to buy her a new one just for traveling so we're going to get a metal one so she cant chew it up. although the lab LOVES her kennel. since we've had the husky (since 8 weeks old) shes been kennel trained And they both still use them to this day. i put in them in the kennel at night and left in there till morning and also put in her kennel when no one is home. we dont want her getting bored and chewing on something she shouldnt. but both of the kennels are great and it is ok to leave ur dog in there for like 8 hrs (over night) and for a few hrs while ur gone if u dont want them left alone to roam the house. hope this helps!

some are metal and some are plastic we use plastic but out puppy pepper likes to tear up our furniture so we have to put her in the kennel or crate when we are sleeping or are not home
Some are metal, some are plastic and you can get sturdy fabric ones with a frame which are great for trips and holidays. It is fine to let a dog sleep in them over night. My dog has used his from being a pup and now goes to it without being told to when he is ready for bed. You can use them when you are out in the day time but not for more than 3 or 4 hours, especially if they are going to be in there all night too. They are good as they get the dog used to being in a cage. A big advantage if they ever need to stay over night at the vet. They can also fold down and be transported so you can easily take the bed with you if you go on holiday. I’ve found the fabric one especially good for this. They also help with house training as the dog does not like to mess in their bed and learns to wait to go to the toilet if they are shut in the crate.
All the dog catalogues carry them
http://www.petedge.com

and they run from fabric, wire, and plastic.
Fabric can be ripped open by a dog that is determined
Plastic can be chewed through
Wire is the safest, collapses easily so it can be carried in the car.
Crates are used for transporting dogs, housebreaking, and just a place that a dog can call his own when he wants some peace and quiet. All my dogs have loved their crates, and although there are some issues about the length of time a dog or puppy can be crated , when I’m housebreaking a dog, they are in it at least 8 hours at night with no problem. During the day, especially when showing, the dogs can spend up to 5 hours in a crate which keeps them safe and out of the way of all the ruckus at dog shows.
At home I always have 2 or 3 with open doors for the dogs to nap in, and they do nap in them, preferring them to their big soft dog beds.
I also crate them when running the vacuum as all my dogs seem to feel the vacuum is a monster and needs to be killed.
