They are used for a place for the dog to stay when the owner is out of the house. It’s a very useful house training tool. We have always crate trained our dogs, and they love them. When they want a break from the kids, or they are scared from lightning, they will go there for a moment of peace or security. Just make sure the crate is large enough for the animal to stand up and turn around. If you get them too large or too small, they won’t work as well.
A dog crate is a necessity when you are house training a dog. A dog generally won’t poop or pee where it sleeps, so a crate is useful there. It is also useful when you have to be away from the house and the dog is not house trained or is chewing up clothes or furniture. There is also a travel crate that you would use for trips to the vet or on a plane. Hope this helps!
if u traveling with your dog it will useful to you
we have a crate for our dog.. she sleeps in it at night, and she stays in it (mostly sleeping) when we are away from home ( at work, etc). this prevents her from getting into anything bad while we arent there to supervise her. it also helps with potty training because a dog will not go in the area in which it sleeps. some people think that its not nice to leave a dog confined to a small area. however, in the wild, dogs would live in a den. the crate becomes their den.. just a nice quiet place where they can go to sleep that will always be their own.
Confining your dog while not at home or while travelling….also works well for small children.
Dogs are naturally “denning” animals.
The crate is their den.
It represents the place they can go to and feel secure and comfort.
The crate is our friend.
If there is a thunderstorm and the dog is scared, going into a crate will help them feel secure.
If you are gone for the day (most of us have to work), the crate helps cut down on separation anxiety because it is a source of security.
During this time the crate also prevents the dog from getting into trouble while the owner is gone.
No chewn computer cords, shoes, ripped furniture from dogs jumping up and down to check and see who is walking by the house (which just winds the dog up and creates more anxiety – this also teaches the dog to bark at everyone passing by, when you are at home you are constantly telling your dog to quit barking).
You get the picture.
Just remember – the crate is our friend and should treated like a friend – not a punishment.
Don’t “ban your dog to it’s crate” when you are mad at him.
It is not a jail, and if used as such you won’t be able to get him in it.
It is also helps tremendously when/if your dog has to stay overnight someplace else (vets office, when you visit a friend, or kennel your dog if you go on vacation) – you bring a bit of your dog’s home with him and that helps him feel safe and secure.

You may find this website helpful, it tells what a crate should be used for and how to introduce your dog to the crate. Helped me when I was crate training my puppy!
