Question by Carlaney: We feed our Toy poodle only real food "no dog food" She eats meats, rice and veggies. Is this bad for her?
She has never really enjoyed "dog food". She gets a scrambled egg beater with 1/4 piece of cheese for breakfast and whatever we have for dinner if it's not too spicy or greasy. I always try to blance it out. She has never been sick and weighs 10 pounds.

I would go easy on the grain and be sure she gets plenty of meat. You might want to give a dietary supplement, flax seed oil and low fat cottage cheese with her food just to make sure she is getting every thing she needs. Giving your dog hard chew toys and brushing her teeth might be a good idea too.

I think that it is fine. just make sure that she doesn’t get too much tartar on her teeth (you might need to brush them).
Yes it is bad for her. She needs a quality dog food like Science Diet. I’m sure she doesn’t enjoy dog food if you feed her table food all the time…. But, it is NOT good for her. She is NOT getting proper nutrition.
As long as she gets the protein that she needs and isn’t eating too unhealthy. No chocolate!
let’s see. I’ve seen dogs eat their own poop. How bad could that be.
it’s not bad. What do you think cavedogs ate? Mighty Dog from a can?
i would say its fine because alot of my aunties do this with their dog (rice and meat and etc) plus they have a doggy cook book from japan which the dishes look AMAZINGLY delicious (haha).
But just remember dont add any oil to anything the dog eats, not salty or sweet. (:
As long as the food doesn’t have lot of spices, it’s a great diet for a dog.
If my sister’s not cooking it….then it’s ok
I don’t know much about this, but I do know that regular meat and other foods are better for a dog’s teeth. Just look at all of the dogs that eat regular dog food and have to get a $ 500 teeth cleaning when they get old because of all of the tarter. But then look at wolves. They eat meat. Do they get a $ 500 teeth cleaning? No, meat is better on a dog’s teeth than dog food.
I think it’s fine to feed her healthy human foods. My vet recommended that we feed our dogs canned vegetables to control their weight.
Not bad diet for your little one. In fact a very nutritious diet. Just don’t forget to add vitamins on a daily or weekly basis. Your vet can inform you on what may be needed. Also don’t forget the regular check ups with your vet.
Yes human food is bad for dogs. She may not have any visible problems now, but you are toying with her life expectancy and quality of health later on in her life.
Also, at 10 lbs for a toy poodle she is on her way to becoming overweight. Which can be a precurser for health issues such as liver problems, heart problems, and breathing problems.
Stop it now. Talk to your vet on what is the best way to start her back on a diet of healthy dog food. It might take a combination of wet and dry food. My toy poodle/boston terror mix was very picky and we had to mix her food. I rarely feed her human food, one or twice a year (holidays usually ~loved turkey) My baby girl lived to the ripe old age of 16 years old. This was helped by feeding her a healthy diet for dogs.
Good luck!
Ah yes…I would read up on the subject more though. I’m starting the prey model diet so soon I will be cooking for my dogs too. Anyways rice isn’t good for dogs. It is very hard on their stomach and sometimes it will sit there and form a big rice ball (ewwies) so no rice. Go for idk….errmmm other diets. No dog food hehe. Most people prefer to do it raw….like barf (my least fav) or prey model (what i’m starting). Look it up. Have fun. Dog food is bad for dogs.
Doesn’t sound too bad. I’d also throw in some ground-up egg shells and garlic.
Besides some of that store-bought stuff can use stuff that ain’t fit for humans, so why would it be any good for another mammal?
A real food diet of a protien source (meat, egg) & veggies or fruit, plus some grain is fine for dogs. You may need to add additional supplement such as calcium, phosphorus depending on the age & health of your dog.
Canned pumpkin, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, are also very good. Blend or mash veggies & fruit since they can be harder to break down. Sugar, too much sodium, too much fat are not good. Too many fatty foods can cause pancreatis in dogs. Use a quality source of protien. Rice & pasta can also be added. Olive oil, canola oil, unsalted butter. I add vitamin c, among other things, to my dogs’ food.
Most commercial dog food has just horrible things in it. Some even contain euthanized animals from vets, farms, zoos. Standards for pet food are very low and allow for floor sweepings, rotting meat and the packages it comes in.
There is a lot of info online. Many people make a batch of food and freeze small bags for their pets.
(I have 5 pugs and supplement their kibble with real food)
I would say it’s fine if you get some doggy vitamins, I heard onions are bad for a dog’s immune system. I give my dogs Science Diet mixed with water or Chicken broth (let the food soak it up) with leftovers, try that .
As long as the food does not contain sugar (not counting natural sugars) or salt. It should not be a problem. I’ve never seen wild dogs eat Purina before and they seem to be just fine. Besides rice and veggies are in a lot of dog foods particularly the ones that cost the most money…
(My mom’s mini maltese lived on Beggin’ Strips because she hated dog food..So I’m sure you’re doing better than that)
I have a toy poodle and she has to be fed table food. She never would eat dog food, EVER. She’s healthy and not overweight at all. Poodles generally exercise themselves, that plus walks you give you dog should keep her healthy. If you keep it balanced and she isn’t overweight or sick, stick to what you’re doing. My dog weighs 11 pounds, but isn’t at all fat, for whatever reason she just big. She doesn’t even meet toy poodle AKC standards, shes too tall. Oh well, a happy healthy dog is what you should strive for and it sounds like you’re doing a good job. So keep it up!
FYI, 10 lbs for a toy poodle is the average, at least on wikipedia (woot!)
I actually have no clue. But wait! There’s more! I recommend talking to your breeder or vet to see what they have to say. I personally think dog food is for the dogs, but hey, people are poping up everywhere saying that real food is real good.
If your dog has never been sick, I’m sure it’s fine. Just be super careful about what you’re feeding her!
Best of luck.
No, a well balanced home cooked diet is far superior to most major brands.
Avoid onions, and easy on the tomatoes. Your diet sounds just fine, as long as she has no trouble (excess gas) from the egg beaters.
No grapes or raisins, and no Macadamia nuts.
actually this is not good for your dog. he needs to eat dog food. eatin human food all the time isnt good for him, be sure to also give him dog food.
