What is the best crate size and type for a Maltese?

Question by Kira™: What is the best crate size and type for a Maltese?
I'm going to get a Maltese puppy and I need to know what crate to get. What material is best? I'm not sure whether to get a plastic or wire crate. And what are "fiberglass crates" and "small molded plastic crates"? And what size is best? I'm debating between 19", 22", and 24". Thanks!
Ok, thank you, I understand that it has to be just big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. But now, the big question - what kind of crate? Plastic or wire?

Answer by Renee T
The best crate for your dog is one that she can stand up in and turn around (when she is full grown). You don't want her cramped and you also don't want her to have too much room to move around.

We have a plastic crate the kind that is good for travel. No particular reason why.

  1. How big is your puppy? Remember it should only be big enough for the pup to stand up, and turn around. If the crate is too large, it will probably use one side to deficate and the other to sleep in. I have a maltese as well and we used pee pads to potty trsin her!

  2. The best crate size is so your dog can move around and can lay down in.

  3. Go to your local wal-mart and get a medium wire dog kennel. I have a large crate for a med size dog and it is actully rather large.

  4. Absolutely about the size…makes a big difference…I agree with those above (jjust big enough to stand, turn, lay down). You can also get one with a divider! That’s the one we have….really nice

I like our wire crate because it has a removable plastic bottom that we can clean. We also put a blanket in the bottom for comfort.

It is very durable and FOLDS for storage and travel,,,,unlike the big plastic ones :)

  5. I prefer the hard plastic ones that are suitable for air travel. They are good for travel and just around the house. Wire ones are good too, but you cannot take them on a plane and they can be more expensive. Hard plastic ones are also more den like so your pup may take to it better.

Most crates tell you what breeds or weights it is suitable for. Each brand is different, so check the labels.

Take your puppy to a pet store and look at the crates. Find one that she will fit in when she is full grown. Put her in the crate to see if she fits then judge the adult size.

You may need to get one later on if she grows more that you thought, so don’t buy a really expensive one now.
